5 TYPES OF CRANES COMMONLY USED IN CONSTRUCTION

Cranes have a long history of being a staple in construction that reaches back thousands of years. Records indicate the ancient Greeks invented the first cranes and used them as early as 515 BC. Some reports indicate cranes were used for water irrigation in ancient Mesopotamia, thousands of years earlier. In fact, many ancient structures, if built today, would need to use some sort of crane. Today, different types of cranes can be found on almost any construction project, each one specializing in its own specific task.

To help you choose the right machine, we’ve broken down the different types of cranes (mobile and fixed) and their uses below.

1. CRAWLER CRANE

Unlike the wheeled carry deck cranes, crawlers are track vehicles. Instead of wheels, crawlers are built on an undercarriage fitted with a pair of rubber tracks. Though this limits the crawler’s turning capacity, the tracks make it possible to use on soft ground and sites with limited improvement without sinking. Some crawler cranes have an attached telescopic arm that allows it to change its size, making them highly adaptable on many terrains. Unlike carry decks, however, crawlers are best used for long-term projects due to their bulkiness, special set up, and need to be transported from site to site.

2. ROUGH TERRAIN CRANE

As the name implies, these cranes are used for pick and carry operations off-road and on rough terrains. A rough terrain crane is built similarly to a crawler crane, but instead of tracks, the undercarriage is outfitted with four large rubber tires that are typically equipped with four-wheel drive. Rough terrain cranes are also fitted with telescopic booms and outriggers to improve stability and make mobility much more manageable in tight and rough areas.

3. TRUCK-MOUNTED CRANE

Truck-mounted cranes are made up of two parts: the carrier (truck), and the boom (arm). Due to their unique build, they’re able to travel easily on the road with no unique set up or transportation equipment. Truck-mounted cranes are outfitted with counterweights and outriggers for stabilization, allowing them to move slowly while carrying a large load. Different versions of the truck-mounted crane exist; for example, special truck-mounted cranes are used for the inspection, maintenance, and building of bridges.

4. ALL TERRAIN CRANE

These cranes are perfect for remote construction sites with no road access. For example, they are commonly used for the installation of oil and gas pipelines, the erection of wind turbines, the lifting of heavy pre-cast concrete building segments and other construction and heavy haulage applications. All terrain cranes are some of the largest, most mobile cranes available today. They combine the best of both worlds: the mobility of truck mounted cranes and the maneuverability of rough terrain cranes. Generally, the all terrain crane has a four wheel drive system and is powered by one or two engines. The all terrain crane uses a hydraulically powered telescopic boom as the main lifting mechanism. The boom is the steel arm of the crane that holds the load. These innovative lifting machines offer all-around flexibility making this crane ideal for multi-use job sites.

5. TOWER CRANE

Commonly used in the construction of tall buildings, tower cranes are beautiful machines that offer amazing lifting capabilities. Due to their size, tower cranes are equipped with an operating cab that controls the entire crane. Tower cranes have their jib extending horizontally from the mast (tower part), which itself rests on a concrete base. A luffing jib is able to move up and down, while the fixed jib has an operating dolly that moves materials horizontally. The engine (called a slewing unit) that controls the rotation of the crane sits on the top of the mast.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CRANE?

Picking the right crane involves figuring out the project’s terrain, the size of the project site, the weather, and the weight of the materials. You also want to consider the length of the project as some cranes, like the crawler crane, are better used for long-term projects than their counterparts. Once you have all of your project specs, you’ll be able to determine which type of crane you’ll need for a successful construction job.

HOW TO SELECT AN INDUSTRIAL HEATER?

Industrial heaters can be used in a variety of applications. When used in drying processes, the heat creates steam that removes moisture from materials. Industrial heaters are also essential to making many types of products, including concrete and asphalt.

Industrial heaters transform energy from a fuel or energy source into thermal energy in a system, process stream, or closed environment. Heat transfer is the process through which thermal energy changes from an energy source to a system.

The most essential components in any industrial heating system are industrial heating elements. Regardless of the application, selecting the proper industrial heating element will increase efficiency, saving money and time.

To help you choose the appropriate type of industrial heater for your project, we put together this guide to demonstrate how to select the best industrial heating element for your needs.

TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL HEATERS AND THEIR APPLICATION

When purchasing industrial heaters, buyers should examine the characteristics of different types of heaters. For example, an engineer will need to consider how much space needs to be heated before determining what sort of heating system is required. A large warehouse in a cold environment will require a different heating system than a tiny room. Industrial heaters come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and configurations. These are some of the most common types.

AIR HEATERS

А radiant heaters, space heaters, and forced air devices are examples of this class of heater.

CIRCULATION HEATER

Circulation heaters are used to warm streams of flowing, moving, or circulating fluid. The fluid heats as it passes through the heater.

DUCT HEATERS

Duct heaters warm up moving air or gas that passes through a duct.

FLEXIBLE HEATERS

Heaters that are flexible may be molded to heat a specific shape.

IMMERSION HEATERS

This sort of heater must be placed into the substance it is heating.

SPACE HEATERS

Space heaters are the best option for small spaces. They’re generally portable, non-emitting, and safe to use.

Industrial heaters are essential in a wide range of industrial applications, including annealing, heat treating, curing/tempering, drying, melting, and OEM/custom heating. Choosing the right heater for a specific job is safer, cost-effective, and more efficient in the long term.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR SEEDING MACHINE FOR PLANTING

If you are preparing for planting, you should think about inspecting and servicing your seeding machine before the work begins. This process is important because the equipment can fail over time due to continued use or even long-term storage. If it is not tuned up, the seeds might not be delivered into the soil as desired. Consequently, the yields might be lower. Here are simple tips to keep in mind when servicing your seeding machine for better performance.

CLEAN THE EQUIPMENT

You should clean the seeding machine before using it for your planting operations. This will promote the efficient placement of seeds on the farm. When cleaning the equipment, you must not overlook the metering components. If these are left clogged with dirt, they will not release seeds optimally. As a result, some areas on the farm might remain bare and others might have unnecessarily more seeds. The belts in the unit should also be washed to ensure flexibility and smooth movement.

REPLACE THE DISC BLADES AND OPENERS

The disc blades and drill openers are critical components in seeding machines because they are designed to form trenches for seed placement. If they are damaged, it will be difficult for them to form good furrows for planting. Therefore, you should check on their condition before the intended day of use. If the blades have experienced wear and become shorter and blunter, it might be time for replacement. Purchase good blades which are compatible with your equipment and the intended crop.

THINK ABOUT THE DEPTH

The depth of seed placement is a critical consideration when planting most crops. If the depth of placement is not optimal, the growth of the plant will be compromised. This could result in lower yields. Therefore, it is advisable to ensure that the components which are designed to regulate the soil depth are in a good state. For instance, the planter unit must be adequately weighted. Also, the depth wheels should be serviced by changing washers and replacing the wheel arms as needed.

TIGHTEN LOOSE PARTS

The components of the seeding machine will fall out of form due to heavy usage in other planting operations. Moreover, if the equipment has been in storage for long, some parts might have become loose. Therefore, you should take some time to inspect the machinery and identify such anomalies. For instance, seed tubes and guards, firmers, row cleaners and wheels should be tightened. This will improve overall performance during planting.
